WELGELUK OLIVE ESTATE

Meet the Farmers

Fruits of our labour

Welgeluk Olive Estate, located in western Gauteng, is owned by Mike and Giselle Rabe who are third generation farmers in the region. The family, originally from the Swellendam area in the Western Cape, have endowed the farm with a rich history, including Cape Dutch architecture and a unique heritage. Much TLC and passion over many years has gone into developing and transforming the farm into what it is today, with multiple dwellings, roads, gardens, and walkways, providing a tranquil, welcoming and sanity restoring setting!

Mike and Giselle have had an interest in olive farming since the late 90’s. After much consultation, research and some trial and error, large-scale growing of trees and planting of orchards commenced in 2017 and is still ongoing. Smaller trees purchased from growers in the Cape are cared for and acclimatised in open-air nurseries until large enough to be planted in carefully prepared orchards. Orchards now cover more than 10 hectares!

Experimental plantings of at least 12 cultivars has helped to identify oil and table cultivars that are better suited to the summer rainfall region and Gauteng’s sandstone ridges which receive their fair share of powerful thunderstorms in the summer. Guests are welcome to visit the farm, stay over in a private guesthouse on the premises, take walks in manicured gardens and orchards, and of course, also taste home-made table olives, tapenade and Extra-Virgin Olive Oil.

We guarantee that you will want to take home some of our products and return regularly to relive the experience!
